I was addressing a group of elementary school age children on sexual abuse
and prevention at an after school program in Norfolk. As I taught about
two types of secrets, good secrets that are fun to keep, and bad secrets
that hurt to keep, I proclaimed, "Even if you promise to never ever
tell, you tell a bad secret right away.
A little girl's hand shot up, she looked to be about nine years old.
At first I tried to ignore her hand, most of the time kids don't have
questions relevant to the program. They usually want to share some totally
unrelated observation that has nothing to do with the topic being addressed.
Obviously it just detracts from the program. But she persisted and continued
to wave her hand at me.
Finally I called on her. "What if they make you swear to God not
to tell?"
I paused for a moment as I silently prayed that God would give me the
right answer. "I'm a pastor, I told her, and I know that Jesus
and God both have a special place in their hearts for children," I
told her. "In fact, in Matthew 18 Jesus taught that if anyone cause
a child to be offended or suffer, better they had never been born. Your
safety is the most important thing to God; He would want you to tell. Not
only that, but if someone is touching you this way, they are probably touching
other kids as well. By telling you would be helping to protect them."
After the programs conclusion some of the staff come over to talk to me
about this young girl. Her uncle had been molesting her and he made her
swear to God that she would never tell. Then he told her if she broke her
promise that God would send her to hell!
A few days later the director of the after school program called me. She
told me how helpful it was for this girl to hear a pastor tell her that
God would approve of her telling. It broke the haunting torment of a satanic
lie in her life. Thank You, Lord, for using me!
